How to Make Snow Ice Cream!

Snow glorious snow!  Who doesn’t love the snow – well for starters MY MOM! Too bad she lives in West Virginia where they are blessed with plenty of it! I thought because of all the snow storms headed our way I would share one of my favorite child memories that I passed along to my daughter. - Snow Ice Cream

When my daughter was little, she and her friends would start with their “snow day ritual” any time the weathermen started predicting snow (they never figured out that the weatherman was usually wrong, we live in the South.)  If you aren’t familiar with it, it consisted of flushing ice down the toilet, wear your pajamas inside out and backwards, sleep with a spoon under the pillow, run around the table 10 times clockwise and place a white crayon on the windowsill. Now, what the girls didn’t know was that I had a counter ritual to prevent snow days!  This consisted of flushing hot water down the toilet, wear your pajamas the correct way, sleep with a fork under your pillow, run around the table 10 times counter-clockwise and place a yellow crayon on the windowsill.  Happily, mine worked more than theirs!

But, when the snow would actually come, WE never missed making Snow Ice Cream!

Snickerdoodle Hot Cocoa!

Baby it's cold outside! Warm up with some Hot Chocolate! Try this recipe out.

Snickerdoodle Hot Cocoa

1 cup vanilla chips (I used Guittard Choc-Au-Lait Chips)
1 ½ cups heavy cream
1 ½ cups milk
¼ tsp. cream of tartar (it’s what helps a snickerdoodle have its flavor)
¼ tsp. ground cinnamon
Pinch of freshly ground nutmeg

For the Cup:
¼ cup vanilla chips
¼ cup cinnamon sugar mix
Sprinkle cinnamon sugar mix onto a plate.

On a plate sprinkle the ¼ cup vanilla chips, heat in microwave until they melt (about a minute).

Dip cup rim into melted chips and then into the cinnamon sugar mix. Let set up.
Combine the vanilla chips, cream, and milk in a heavy saucepan. Heat up slowly, not going higher than low-medium.

Cheers!

Warm Up With a Soup Exchange!

When the weather turns cold, like it is here in Nashville there’s nothing better than a nice, hot bowl of soup to warm you up. What better way to spend time with friends and/or family then with a ‘Soup Exchange’?

You’ve probably heard of cookie exchanges, but a soup exchange is novel (and more nutritious). It should be small, because it’s a lot more time consuming to make enough soup to pass around, than cookies. But, the small party size creates a nice intimate evening.

This party really has no planning involved. Just be sure to give your guest at least 2 weeks notice. Invitations can be verbal or via email. Ask guest to RSVP with their soup exchange 1 week before party with be any special toppings you should supply.

At a recent soup exchange I attended, there were 7 ladies total, and each of us brought six 6-cup freezer containers of our most delicious homemade soup, plus one 1-1/2 cup serving ready to sample. We also enjoyed homemade bread, delicious salad, and wine, plenty of wine. It really was a very nice evening. And super filling. I can’t wait to pull some yummy soup out of the freezer on my next too-overwhelming-to-cook day.

Soups on the menu at the party were Corn Chowder, Tomato Dill, Cheesy Potato, Italian Minestrone, Chicken Tortilla, Red Beans & Rice (my soup), and Old Fashioned Chicken Noodle. What a variety! If you don’t have a favorite soup recipe, there are gazillions on the web. (foodnetwork.com has some of my favorite.) Good homemade soup is even easy to improvise. See a step-by-step guide here

What’s your favorite?

Friends and family warm your heart; now you have a way to warm their tummies.

Enjoy!

My Husband likes to add more rice to his.
To make my Red Beans & Rice Soup:

2 Large Boxes of Zatarain's Red Beans & Rice

2 Boxes Chicken Stock

1 can Kidney Beans

Cajun Seasoning to taste

1 pound hot sausage

1 pound Hillshire Farm Kielbasa

Cook meats, then combine all ingredients and let simmer.  I made this recipe up so it is a taste and go kinda deal. Just make sure the soup isn’t too thick or thin and add seasoning slowly until it’s flavored to taste.

Chasin' Away the Winter Blues

Throwing a Post-Holiday party is the best way to chase away the winter blues that settle in following New Year’s.  Here are some great party theme ideas to get your creative juices flowing!

Custom design by Angee's Eventions
Winter Warming Party: Set up a hot chocolate mixing station, where guests can create their own custom blend of hot chocolate mix, using your own homemade hot cocoa and a variety of toppings. Toppings such as; crushed peppermint, Heath bars, chocolate shavings or sprinkles, chocolate chips, and of course, marshmallows. Have candy sticks and chocolate dipped spoons on hand for stirring in flavored coffee syrups and flavored liquors.  For your décor, use colors like blue, green and white. Use shapes such as snowmen and mittens.  I have created all the printables you need for this Winter Warming Party.

Winter Luau: Shorts, skirts and flip-flops are required for the guests, serving Margaritas and guacamole are a must, and the heat should be turned up in the house to simulate warm summer temperatures.  Go all out with décor; A classic luau calls for tropical decorations such as tiki torches and leis, but give these decor items a decidedly winter touch, wrap twinkle lights around the base of the tiki torches. Make themed leis made of all-white paper snowflakes. Set up a tiki bar, but toss fake snow across the top of the bar. For centerpieces, fill beach buckets full of sand, and place silk Hawaiian flowers in them. Or make "sand" snowmen using plastic foam balls painted tan. Add sunglasses and leis to the snowmen to make them party ready. Hang paper snowflakes and beach balls from the ceiling to marry the two divergent party themes. Your invitations should combine the winter and luau ideas. Include a picture of a Snowman surfing or select an image of the beach as your invitation backdrop, but attach small snowflakes to it. Use wording such as "Get out of the cold and come to the island! Join us for a winter luau party!"

Beat the Winter Blues: Go all out with the color blue, using accents of silver and white; cover your table in blue tablecloths. Place vases full of fresh blue flowers such as hydrangeas around the party site. Put blue light bulbs in some fixtures, or enhance the mood with blue candles. Serve blue food and drinks. Such as blue cupcakes, blue M&M's, blue corn tortilla chips and blueberry mojitos, or non-alcoholic smoothies with blueberries and ask party goers to wear blue.  For entertainment, play blues music, or "blue" songs such as "Blue Suede Shoes" by Elvis Presley. Play "The Blues Brothers" or Blue Man Group DVD in the background.  Of course the invitations must be blue, bright and shiny. You can decorate them yourself with everything from blue sequins and glitter to blue string and tissue paper. Or you can go another route with music notes and pictures of typical "blues" instruments (saxophone, piano, horns, etc.) that read something like; Got the Winter Blues?

Be sure to include all of the details about your event, including the location, date and time of the party. If you want guests to wear costumes or bring their own beverages, indicate this on the invitation, as well

I hope you enjoy these winter parties! If you use one of these themes please email me a few photos to share!
